Across the span of two days in late January and February, 16 public relations seniors toured four public relations agencies and two corporations as part of the annual Public Relations Student Society of America Agency Tour. Organized by Professor Betty Jones, students had the opportunity to visit Coca-Cola, Delta, Jackson Spalding, Ketchum, MSL Group and Porter Novelli.
“Since so many of our students begin their careers in Atlanta, I wanted to help open doors for them with an annual tour” said Jones. “Since 2013 we've visited 12 agencies and corporations throughout the city.”
Each company offered the students a glimpse into the industry through case studies and interactive discussions. Additionally, students had an opportunity to network with professionals and obtain valuable career advice.
“There is no better way to get a feel for the culture at different agencies than by visiting them in person,” said Christine Boddy, senior public relations major, who participated in the tour. “The agencies were all wonderful hosts. They each set aside a few hours to teach us about their work and their clients.”
“I really enjoyed getting to experience the corporate cultures of these agencies first hand,” commented Sabrina Lewis, senior public relations major and Spanish minor, who also participated in the tour. “You learn so much more about a company by visiting their office rather than just visiting their website.”
“It was great to learn the specifics of how agencies interact with their clients,” added Abby Jensen, senior public relations major. “Jackson Spalding did a great job of explaining how its team worked with the corporate communication departments of some big businesses.”
However, the tour wasn’t all strictly business. In fact, students had the unique opportunities to explore the archives at Coca-Cola, discover their personal brand at Porter Novelli and even participate in a simulated crash at Delta.
“Porter Novelli’s seminar on personal branding and the crash simulation at Delta Air Lines were definitely my personal highlights from the tour,” said Boddy.
