Prison journalism: For, by and about the incarcerated. Who gets to tell their stories?
Karin Assmann and Jonathan Peters, are on an accepted panel titled “Prison journalism: For, by and about the incarcerated. Who gets to tell their stories?,” AEJMC’s annual conference in Philadelphia, PA (August 8 - 11).
Abstract: Invited scholars and professionals will discuss different perspectives of reporting about and from prison. Perspectives include learning journalistic skills behind bars, journalistic norms and practices under prison censorship, consuming news media while incarcerated and, importantly, journalists’ access to prisons for the purpose of reporting about the criminal justice system, prison conditions and prisoner treatment.
