Abstract: The Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh was intimately involved in college athletics as the longtime president of the University of Notre Dame. However, he downplayed the university’s football legacy to the extent that he could as he worked to transform Notre Dame into a world-class research university. He formulated the notion of a grand bargain between athlete and university, but that bargain has come into question as college sports has become more commercialized.
