The Influence of Photo Editors on Visual News Representation
Mortensen, T., Kyser Lough and Ford, R. “The Influence of Photo Editors on Visual News Representation,” accepted to the Visual Communication Studies division at the 2023 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Annual Conference, August.
Abstract: Previous research has shown that a greater diversity of photojournalists correlates with greater diversity within published news photos. However, it is ultimately the photo editor who makes publication choices. This research in progress seeks to explore potential race and gender bias of US photo editors toward news photographers whose photos are chosen for publication. To this end, a 2 (race) by 2 (gender) field experiment and accompanying survey of US photo editors is in progress.
