The Past as Persuader in The Great Speckled Bird
The Past as Persuader in The Great Speckled Bird
Abstract: This study examines journalistic uses of history in the underground newspaper The Great Speckled Bird during its original run, 1968-1976, based on Richard E. Neustadt and Ernest K. May's categories of the uses of history by political decision makers. The Bird used history for context, nostalgia and analogy, to promote values, and to challenge past assumptions, all to bolster a point of view for its readers, the hippie community in Atlanta, Georgia
