Abstract: The field of communication has dramatically changed in the last few decades, but what is currently happening in mass communication academic programs is strongly related to the early years of journalism education and cannot be analyzed without a historical perspective. This chapter argues that, in order to anticipate further changes in the digital era, one needs to see journalism and mass communication higher education as a process where the past legitimizes the present and predicts the future. It is also important to examine how the new technologies have impacted people’s use of various communication channels and their trust (or distrust) in the media. The efforts that many governments and organizations have made in the last decade to educate the public reflect this new situation.
