First Place Faculty Paper for the Visual Communication Division
Abstract: Researchers looked at newspaper coverage in Georgia to study the visual content presented on front pages about the 2022 midterm elections. Results indicate that newspapers favored wire photography by placing large images above the fold, while staff photography was often smaller. These images provided consistent visual frames surrounding election security, often neglecting the candidates themselves, and the images were created predominantly by white men despite the diversity present in the candidates and the state.
