Dull as Dachau
Dull as Dachau
Andy Kavoori (2021). Dull as Dachau.
Abstract: Dull as Dachau is a reflexive, autoethnographic account of the contrived engagement of American undergraduates (from a privileged background) of a class-mandated visit to the Dachau Concentration Camp, near Munich, Germany. Written as a poem, with commentary/contextual referencing in end notes, the essay explores the transactional nature of dark tourism and offers a critique of such pedagogical engagements with history, especially in the context of American undergraduate education and the study abroad enterprise.
