Abstract: Increasing political polarization has led to a new phenomenon: Putatively non-partisan organizations becoming unwitting targets of emotionally charged, ideologically-motivated attacks that have toppled university presidents, weakened beer brands, and damaged reputations. Integrating research in crisis communications, political psychology, and political science, we propose an emergent framework for understanding “crises of passion.”
