Overview
As part of the public service mission of the University of Georgia, the Grady College works to brings its knowledge and resources to the people of Georgia and beyond to enhance their quality of life.
Avid Training
The Avid Authorized Training Center offers certified instruction on Avid Media Composer, and DaVinci Resolve. With a facility featuring the latest versions of each software, lead trainer Professor James Biddle provides basic and advanced level courses for professionals, as well as UGA staff, students, professors, seeking a new or advanced skill set on one or more of these NLE (Non-Linear Editing Systems).
Covering Poverty: A toolkit for Journalists
Covering Poverty is a toolkit for journalists who want to know how to incorporate poverty coverage in their reporting in various beats — health, housing, financial services and more.
Crisis Communication Think Tank
The Crisis Communication Think Tank (CCTT) is a yearly event, sponsored by the C. Yarbrough Professorship in Crisis Communication Leadership, the Center for Health and Risk Communication, the Georgia Athletic Association Professorship in Grady College and the Hearst Visiting Professionals Fund at the University of Georgia. The CCTT attendees are invited members of a crisis communication coalition, selected as thought leaders in the field. The CCTT aims to build collaborations among researchers, practitioners, and educators, in and outside the U.S., in advancing crisis communication science and practice through dialogue on emerging topics and co-creation of evidence-based advice for next-generation crisis research and practice.
Digital Natives
Grady College and the Georgia Press Education Foundation have joined forces for Grady Digital Natives, ana new and innovative program that connects college students and Georgia news organizations. The online Grady Digital Natives program will connects UGA journalism students with digital news expertise with Georgia newsrooms to help local journalists accomplish specific digital goals.
Georgia Scholastic Press Association
Founded in 1928 by Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia, GSPA promotes the understanding and practice of journalism. Over the past 90 years, GSPA has evolved to encompass all forms of scholastic media, including broadcast, literary magazine, newsmagazine, newspaper and yearbook. GSPA’s goal is to help publications progress by providing networking and skill development opportunities.
High School Discovery
The Summer Media Academy at Grady College is a residential, weeklong program focused on experiential learning. This program is open to students ages 13-17 interested in the mass communication field.

Grady Productions
Grady Productions is a video production service for the University of Georgia and Athens, Georgia, area. Our function is to provide quality video services while giving Grady College students the opportunity to gain real-world experience.
McGill Lecture, Symposium and Medal
For nearly 40 years, the McGill Lecture has brought significant figures in journalism to the University of Georgia to help us honor Ralph McGill’s courage as an editor. In 2007, we added the McGill Symposium, bringing together students, faculty and leading journalists to consider what journalistic courage means and how it is exemplified by reporters and editors. In 2009, we awarded the first McGill Medal to a U.S. journalist whose career has exemplified journalistic courage.
Service Learning
Service-learning at the University of Georgia is the application of academic skills and knowledge to address a community need, issue, or problem and to enhance student learning.
Solutions Journalism for the South
Grady College is proud to be one of a few Solutions Journalism Hubs located in journalism schools throughout the U.S. that support storytelling covering both the problems and the actions being taken to address them. Solutions journalism is rigorous and compelling reporting about responses, which includes how that response has worked, or why it hasn’t; insight (what can be learned from a response and why it matters); evidence (providing data or qualitative results that indicate effectiveness); and limitations (placing responses in context).
Service Learning
Service-learning at the University of Georgia is the application of academic skills and knowledge to address a community need, issue, or problem and to enhance student learning. Service-learning helps integrate two core aspects of UGA’s mission—teaching and service. Students at the Grady College have the opportunity to take part in classes with real world clients including non-profit organizations, small businesses and campus organizations. Their contributions to these organizations help build a stronger community.

LEarning Through Doing
Students in David Clementson’s Public Relations Campaigns class were one of the UGA students groups helping the Athens-area Bear Hollow Zoo. The public relations students did research, conducted a survey among zoo customers and proposed new advertising messages to reach first-time visitors. “This is really important to me because it lets me see if this is something I might want to continue to do when I graduate,” said student Reese Mitchell.
Students in Talking Dog, the student-led advertising and public relations agency, are working with Malcom Mitchell and his Share the Magic Foundation to raise awareness for literacy programs.
Julianna Russ, a third-year journalism major at the University of Georgia, is one of 100 college students from across the nation to be selected for the second cohort of the Voyager Scholarship, the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service. Established in 2021 by the Obama Foundation and Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky, the Voyager Scholarship is a two-year program for students in their junior and senior years of college from across the U.S. who are committed to pursuing careers that serve the public and their communities.
This summer, 17 Carmical Sports Media Institute and visual journalism students traveled to Australia to cover the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup for The Associated Press.
EMST students worked with the World War II Foundation to film a documentary on location in France and Switzerland based on the book, “Scholars of Mayhem,” by Daniel Guiet and Timothy Smith. The documentary will air on PBS in 2024.
The Oglethorpe Echo, which is led by students through a partnership with Grady College journalism students, earned nine section and individual awards in the Georgia Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest. The Grady student journalists who won the awards competed against full-time, professional journalists from around the state, many of whom have been covering their cities and counties for years.

Summer Media Academy 2025
Summer Media Academy 2025
In partnership with the University of Georgia Summer Academy program, Grady College is offering weeklong, in-person camps in the following subject areas:Advertising and Public Relations; Broadcast Journalism; Multimedia Journalism; and Entertainment and Media Studies. Instructors will lead engaging activities and participants will hear from guest speakers. Students also work on specialized projects over the course of each week.
- Ages: 13-17 (at the start of camp)
- Format: In-person, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., M-F. Overnight participants arrive Sunday and leave the following Saturday morning. The complete schedule will be available to registrants a few weeks before the start of each camp.
- Cost: Day Camp - $530 or Residential Camp - $1255
- Registration: Registration will be available beginning Jan. 15, 2025, through the UGA Summer Academy website. There is a max of 20 participants for each camp week, and participants are accepted on a rolling basis.
- Limited need-based financial aid is available. To apply, fill out this financial aid application and write a statement of interest (250 words) explaining why you wish to attend a Summer Media Academy program. You also must include a statement of need (500-word maximum) on why you seek financial assistance, one sample of work and one letter of recommendation. Email the completed packet of information to journalismacademy@uga.edu by March 14, 2025.

BROADCAST JOURNALISM: June 9-13
In this course, participants will learn to find and tell stories that matter with a focus on developing storytelling skills in audio and visual forms. They’ll consider what makes a story important, how to gather credible information, and how to present it in the most effective way. Participants will practice and hone technical skills in reporting, videography and video editing as the class works together with the instructors to produce a broadcast show.
