Abstract: This study examined metaphors and metaphorical expressions used as rhetorical devices in the Russian state-sponsored media Sputnik’s coverage of the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP) was conducted on 234 news items about the American pullout from Afghanistan. It identified 11 metaphors such as, “Biden’s Saigon” “American atrophy,” or “night of the long knives.” The analysis follows the premises of cognitive linguistics and metaphor theory and focuses on exploring metaphors as linguistic realizations of underlying patterns of thought for propaganda purposes.
