What moves young people to journalism in a transitional country
Abstract: This study tested the impact of motivations on willingness to work in journalism among journalism students in Serbia, through a national survey at four major journalism programs in the country. The results showed that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations have a significant impact on willingness to work in journalism, with one extrinsic motivation (achievement of public goals) having a slightly better predictive power. Having experience in journalism played a significant role in moderating the relationship between intrinsic motivation and willingness to work in journalism. The study is the first one of the kind conducted in a transitional country of Eastern Europe. The results are discussed in the context of the Self-Determination Theory of motivations applied to journalism across national borders.
