Reporters for Democracy: Covering the Democracy Beat
Karin Assmann and Lorenz, A. “Reporters for Democracy: Covering the Democracy Beat,” presented at AEJMC, August, San Francisco.
Abstract: In recent years news organizations have been adding a new beat to their repertoires: the democracy beat. This analysis of metajournalistic discourse around the decision to create democracy-centered beats and interviews with 24 US-based democracy reporters and editors finds a striking lack of consensus around the definition of democracy and a beat that operationalizes democracy reporting along a broad, ill-defined spectrum.
