Abstract: As the oldest peer-reviewed journal of mass communication in the United States celebrates its 50th anniversary, this essay provides new impetus to answer James Carey’s call to address the problem(s) of journalism history. Informed by a comprehensive audit of the journal completed in 2022, the authors illuminate gaps from the past to fill with rich scholarship in the next 50 years.
