Join Grady in exploring Travel Writing in Copenhagen, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities. Immerse yourselves in Danish life through day trips, conversations with world-class journalists, and talks by leading experts on Danish culture, royal history, Greenland’s evolving geopolitical importance, and green innovation.
Copenhagen is the capital and largest city of Denmark. It is located on the Islands of Zealand and Amager, at the southern end of The Sound. In 1445, Copenhagen was made the capital of Denmark and the residence of the royal family. Copenhagen is a city that “breathes Old World charm” and remains one of the most friendly and pristine cities in all of Europe. The city actually aims to become the most cycle-friendly city in the world and was rewarded with the title of “Green Capital of the year” in 2014.
On this program, you will have plenty of opportunities to explore this beautiful city and experience the culture and people who make it what it is, one of the most sustainable cities in the world where living green is a way of life. You’ll experience a place where reporting with a solutions lens is highly valued and where Greenland’s evolving geopolitical significance is never far from people’s minds.

Travel journalism has three distinct qualities: emphasis on cultural awareness; ambition to provide depth or insight beyond the surface; and complexity of theme, material, and structure within a specific place and with a specific people. While being immersed in Denmark, we will explore a range of techniques that travel journalists use to discover and verify information, to tell stories, and to engage audiences. Therefore, we will:
1. Practice the essential skills and knowledge required of today’s multimedia journalists with an emphasis on pitching, reporting processes, multiplatform storytelling, solutions journalism, and being published.
2. Explore and expand a specific idea in order to produce two stories: an experiential fun vertical video and a profile/event/news multiplatform piece (a solutions approach is highly encouraged) all of which allow you to dive deeper into a particular area of interest, whether historical, cultural, political, etc.
3. Learn about doing journalism from international locations for local audiences, but even more important, learn how to: listen well, appreciate differences, manage time, push through the uncomfortable or unknown, discover hidden passions, embrace change, overcome fear, gain independence, make mistakes, cultivate an open mind, and learn more about who you are.
*Note: Sustainability is a way of life in Denmark so most of the topics you will come across here have an environmentally friendly angle
Any currently enrolled undergraduate college student is eligible to apply. Strong candidates include students who are passionate and interested in learning about other cultures and communication processes across national borders. They have a high level of personal responsibility and genuine interest in the educational aspect of this program.

Applications for study away in Summer 2027 will open at the start of Fall Semester and are due before midnight, Monday, November 2, 2026.
Costs & Logistics
The program costs vary from year to year depending on number of students enrolled, exchange rates, and logistical changes. The ESTIMATED program fee for Summer 2023 is $4,145 (this includes the $300 security deposit paid upon acceptance to the program). The program fee is only an estimate and is subject to change until all students are committed to the program.
In addition to the program fee, students are expected to pay 3 hours of In-state tuition and UGA Mandatory Fees through their Athena student accounts after registration. The HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships can be applied towards TUITION only if applicable. **non-UGA transient students may have an additional $250 fee upon registration**
The program fee listed above includes the following:
- Lodging in dorm/apartment-style housing (shared bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry facilities, blanket, pillow, and linens provided)
- A welcome and closing dinner
- Site visits and guest lectures
- Public transportation passes for housing location to DIS (Company we arrange lodging through)
- Support from DIS housing staff and community advisor
- 24 hours emergency phone support
- SIM cards for a phone plan activated in Denmark (must arrive with an unlocked US cell phone).
- Travel Health Insurance through UGA
- A dedicated classroom with WiFi access
- Some faculty related expenses
The program fee listed above does not include:
- 3 hours of in-state tuition and UGA Mandatory fees (See UGA’s website for updated tuition and fees rates)
- International roundtrip airfare (typically around $1,200 – $1,500)
- Meals other than the welcome and closing dinner
- Books — if applicable
- Laundry
- Personal purchases and personal travel
- Passport cost if the student does not have one already
- Miscellaneous expenses
