Overview
This course offers you the priceless opportunity to see Prague and the Czech Republic while learning photography as a journalistic method for engaging with place an presence. You will learn about photography as a form of personal and professional visual communication through a foundation of technical, compositional and storytelling aspects. All skill and experience levels, and all majors, are welcome and encouraged to apply.
Emphasizing embodiment and visual awareness, you will explore how images convey meaning, raise ethical questions, and shape our understanding of global contexts through intentional acts of seeing, framing, and interpretation.
You will grow as visual storytellers and travelers and ultimately be able to appreciate the wide differences in perspectives and values found among nations and peoples. You will see the importance of place and history in even the most routine photos you make. And you will have the chance to pursue personal passions in a new context.

Undergraduate Level
The undergraduate course associated with this program is JRLC 3700: Photography and Storytelling. This course offers you the priceless opportunity to see Prague and the Czech Republic while learning photography as a journalistic method for engaging with place and presence. You will learn about photography as a form of personal and professional visual communication through a foundation of technical, compositional and storytelling aspects. All skill and experience levels, and all majors, are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Graduate Level
Graduate students can take this as an upper-level JRMC course that adds a focus on qualitative inquiry as a method to explore the ritual of tourist photography. You will learn about observation as a research method, carry out course-related fieldwork relevant to your interests, and synthesize your field notes into a preliminary findings paper.
This program is open to any undergraduate or graduate student in the US. Strong candidates include students who are passionate and interested in photography (no skill required), journalism, and/or travel. They have a high level of personal responsibility and genuine interest in the educational aspect of this program.

Applications for study away in Summer 2027 will open at the start of Fall Semester and are due before midnight, Monday, November 2, 2026.
Costs & Logistics
The program costs vary from year to year depending on number of students enrolled, exchange rates, and logistical cost changes. The ESTIMATED program fee for Summer 2027 has not been determined at this time. The Program fee for May 2026 was $4075 (this includes a $300 security deposit paid upon acceptance to the program). Program Fees for 2027 have not been established at this time.
In addition to the program fee, students are expected to pay 3 hours of in-state tuition and UGA Mandatory Fees through their Athena student accounts after registration. The HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships can be applied towards TUITION only if applicable. **non-UGA transient students may have an additional $250 fee upon registration**
The program fee listed above includes the following:
- Fully-furnished shared apartments in central Prague
- Educational and cultural activities and adventures
- All program-related transportation
- Overnight trip to Cesky Krumlov
- Travel Health Insurance through UGA
- A welcome dinner, and a closing dinner
- Transit pass for trams, buses, subways
- A dedicated classroom with WiFi access
- and so much more!
The program fee listed above does not include:
- 3 hours of in-state tuition and UGA Mandatory fees (See UGA’s website for updated tuition and fees rates for 2025)
- International airfare (Typically around $1,200 – $1,500)
- Meals other than the welcome and closing dinners
- Books – if applicable
- Personal purchases and weekend travel
- International data plan for your U.S. cell phone. This is a requirement.
- Passport cost if the student does not have one already
- Miscellaneous expenses
Housing & Meals
2027 Lodging information is in the works. Stay tuned for updated information in the weeks ahead! Students are expected to pay for their own meals throughout the duration of the program. A welcome and closing dinner celebration will be provided to students as well.
