Alexia Little’s paper, “Knowledgeable Women Everywhere: Letters to the Editor and the Equal Rights Amendment, 1977,” was accepted for the upcoming Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference (August) and won the Top Student Paper award for the History Division.
Abstract: Recent political debates sparked new interest in the Equal Rights Amendment and the struggle for its failed passage. In 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris held a campaign rally in Houston, Texas, the site of the 1977 National Women’s Conference where an initial battle for women’s equality was waged. This feminist discourse analysis examines that negotiation for equal rights among women in 1977 letters to the editor leading up to and in wake of the NWC.
