Abstract: This study explores the perceptions and processes of solutions visual journalism, with an emphasis on representation, by interviewing the grantees of the global Solutions Visual Journalism Initiative before and after they carried out their projects. Solutions journalism, which focuses on responses to social problems, is well-studied in word-based reporting but less so at the visual level. Photographers initially aligned with traditional photojournalism and solutions journalism practices but shifted their approach to emphasize context, action, and humanization. While solutions visual journalism required more planning and research, it also provided deeper access to communities, allowing photographers to better depict the agency and empowerment of the people. However, the process presented challenges in visualizing solutions, particularly when responses were subtle or less photogenic.
