Carolina Acosta-Alzuru (October 2022). "El fenómeno de la telenovela turca / The Phenomenon of Turkish Dramas.” In Professor Giuliana Cassano’s course Géneros dramáticos televisivos globales / Global Dramatic TV Genres” in Lima, Peru.
Abstract: The demand for Turkish content, once thought of as a passing fad, is today a permanent presence in the global market. By now we have seen Turkish series—dizis—move successfully into countries and regions where only a few years ago many thought these shows would never be able to enter, much less succeed. For instance, they have been displacing telenovelas even on their own turf: Latin America and US Spanish-language television. How did this happen? This presentation traces this “Turkish invasion” and fleshes out the factors that characterize Latin Americans' and US Latinos' consumption of Turkish series.
