6 Grady Students Held Cox Innovation Fellowships in Summer and Fall Terms

Six students in the Journalism Department at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication held Innovation Fellowships with the James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism, Management and Leadership during the 2018 Summer and Fall Terms.

The students contributed to projects sponsored by the Cox Institute in a variety of ways. Jessica Wurst and Jeanne Davis were assigned to work in the news and programming operations at WUGA, the Athens public radio affiliate, during the summer. Alex Soderstrom interned with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s local news team.

In the fall, Nicki Brown and Amy Scott provided research assistance to Ian Urbina, a New York Times investigative reporter who is completing a book project.

Charlotte Norsworthy hosted “The Lead,” a podcast sponsored by the Cox Institute where the student host interviews various news leaders during their visits to Grady. Norsworthy will return as co-hosts during the spring semester. She also interned this summer with NPR’s business desk in Washington D.C. Read more here.

“Journalism training requires experiential learning to be effective,” said Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Institute. “We developed the Innovation Fellowships to create more opportunities for our gifted students to gain that field experience.”
