NPR’s Marilyn Geewax to be Industry Fellow at Grady’s Cox Institute

Marilyn Geewax, a senior business editor at NPR, will serve as an Industry Fellow with the James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership during the spring 2018 semester at the University of Georgia.

Geewax, who has worked for NPR since 2008, will present six open lectures during the semester and will serve as a training resource for students taking a business journalism course at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Geewax’s appointment was announced today in New York during the Fall Conference of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW). She is a SABEW board member and co-chairs its First Amendment Committee.

“Thank you for giving me an opportunity to share my passion for business journalism,” Geewax said. “We can maintain a healthy economy and reliable U.S. Treasury only if journalists pursue and present facts and context to help taxpayers, workers and business owners make wise choices. Helping to prepare a new generation for that challenge is an honor. I look forward to working with UGA students.”

Geewax’s Industry Fellow lectures for 2018 will be held in Studio 100 of the Grady College at 11:15 a.m. on January 22, February 5, 19, 26, March 26 and April 9.

Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Institute, said Geewax’s experience will be invaluable to the student journalists as they study how business, economics and politics are interconnected.

“Marilyn has covered news from around the U.S. as well as China, Japan, South Africa and Europe and will share her global perspective,” Herndon said. “She will demonstrate how complex stories can be told with clarity so that audiences aren’t left wondering what’s important.”

In addition to assigning and editing business radio stories, Geewax often writes for the NPR web site, and regularly discusses economic issues on NPR shows, including Here & Now and the weekend edition of All Things Considered. Her editing work contributed to both an Edward R. Murrow Award and a Heywood Broun Award for NPR’s coverage of the foreclosure crisis.

Geewax has been a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where she studied economics and international relations. She earned a master’s degree at Georgetown University in international economic affairs, and has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University.

Before joining NPR, Geewax served as the national economics correspondent for Cox Newspapers’ Washington Bureau and had worked at its flagship paper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She started as a business reporter for the Akron Beacon Journal.
