Journalism Innovation Lab Launches

Journalism Innovation Lab Launches

February 15, 2014

Student participants receive instruction in the latest techniques for digital storytelling and apply their learning through projects arranged with media partners.  The name Journalism Innovation Lab reflects an expanded digital training mission that began in 2020, when it replaced the Mobile News Lab (see below).

Content Initiatives

The Cox Institute also sponsors and facilitates various content initiatives, including a Covering Poverty project that was launched in 2021. This project can be found at https://coveringpoverty.uga.edu/. Information about the launch of this project can be found here.

Mobile News Lab (2014-2019)

The Cox Institute launched its mobile news lab for selected journalism students during the 2014 Fall semester, and this initiative ran through 2019 until it was replaced by the expanded mission of the Journalism Innovation Lab. The mobile news lab provided students training in the latest mobile newsgathering and storytelling techniques and allowed them to experiment through collaborative projects hosted by leading media organizations. Our initial partners included The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, CNN, LSN Mobile and Vert Mobile. We worked with Louis Gump, who was then president of LSN Mobile, as our advisory board chair, to incorporate our efforts into two initiatives of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce (higher education and mobile workforce development). The initial pilot program was a semester-long extracurricular activity with seven students, but the project expanded to include more than 20 students in later iterations.
