Grady AdPR students recognized with prestigious national awards for research excellence
The Grady College Department of Advertising and Public Relations is proud to announce that two of its graduate students have received distinguished honors for their research in public relations and communications.
Anne Perera, a doctoral student, has been awarded the 2024 Don Bartholomew Award for Excellence in Public Relations Research by the Institute for Public Relations (IPR). This prestigious accolade, sponsored by Ketchum, recognizes Perera’s outstanding contributions to PR research, particularly her work exploring the role of generative AI in public relations. Her summer fellowship with Ketchum allowed her to conduct in-depth surveys and interviews to understand how communication professionals are adopting AI technologies.
“Receiving the Don Bartholomew Award for Excellence in Public Relations Research is a tremendous honor,” said Perera. “This summer, my goal was to bridge the gap between academic research and practical applications. I’m deeply grateful to my advisor, Juan Meng, for her mentorship and support throughout this research journey.”
Sihao “Max” Zhou, another doctoral student, received the 2024 Spring Cision Insights Fellowship for his research on how personalization algorithms shape consumer perceptions of sustainability in the fast fashion industry. Zhou’s project, supported by Cision, used tools like Brandwatch to monitor social media conversations on social media platforms. His work revealed key trends in consumer trust and engagement, providing valuable insights into the intersection of technology, sustainability and brand reputation.
“I’m truly grateful to receive the 2024 Spring Cision Insights Fellowship,” Zhou said. “This recognition motivates me to continue exploring the complex relationship between technology and sustainability.”
“Anne and Sihao have exemplified what it means to push the boundaries of public relations research, said Meng, Department Head and UGA Athletic Association Endowed Professor. “Their work not only enhances our understanding of the rapidly evolving field but also highlights the impact that AdPR students are making on the academic and professional levels.”
Perera and Zhou were honored at the 62nd Annual IPR Distinguished Lecture and Awards Gala in New York City Dec. 4. These accolades highlight the Grady College Department of Advertising and Public Relations’ commitment to advancing innovative research and preparing students to shape the future of the public relations industry.
