Cox Innovation Fellowship Features Largest Summer Group

Seven students from the Journalism Department at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication will gain experiential learning experience during Summer 2019 through Cox Innovation Fellowships.

Leadership, the students are assigned to a variety of media outlets.
The students and their assignments include:

· Nicki Brown, CNN

· Margaret Holland, Atlanta Business Chronicle

· Collin Huguley, Charlotte Business Journal and Sports Business Journal

· Erin Schilling, Atlanta Journal-Constitution

· Amy Scott, NPR

Dr.
Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Institute, said this year’s program
attracted the most interest from students in its four-year history,
which led to the largest group of summer participants. Students were
selected based on their performance in journalism classes, previous
internships or success in student media.

“We believe that
journalism training must go beyond the classroom to be effective,”
Herndon said, explaining the Cox Institute developed its Innovation
Fellowships to create more opportunities for Grady journalism students
to gain field experience.

“We recognize the economic pressures
many companies in the journalism industry are under, and saw that the
numbers of quality paid internships are declining,” Herndon said. “This
program is one way we can help improve the opportunities for our
students while also establishing quality industry-academic partnerships
with media companies.”
