College Editors Convene at Grady for 20th Annual MSCNE

Sixty college journalists from 26 states and the District of Columbia will learn leadership, management and content development skills at the 20th annual Management Seminar for College News Editors on July 26-31 at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Sponsored by the James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership, the seminar will be led by nearly 20 industry professionals and educators.

Featured presenters include Frank LoMonte, executive director of the Student Press Law Center; Butch Ward, senior faculty at The Poynter Institute; and Selwyn Crawford (ABJ ’81), team leader/special writer for The Dallas Morning News.

Grady College journalism faculty members Mark Johnson, Patricia Thomas, Keith Herndon (ABJ '82) and Kent Middleton also will lead or moderate sessions.

A panel discussion on “The State of College Media: Challenges, Opportunities, New Strategies” will feature Charles Davis (MA ’89), dean of the Grady College; Dan Reimold, journalism professor and author of the student journalism blog College Media Matters; John Reetz, owner of Media Solutions Partners; and Natalie McClure (ABJ ’03), general manager of The Red & Black, an independent student news organization at UGA.

Student editors will gain hands-on multimedia experience in a simulated news event that involves UGA police, emergency preparedness and public affairs departments. They also will travel to Atlanta to meet with reporters, editors and producers at CNN, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV. 

The Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership prepares students and professionals for leadership roles in the news media. The Cox Institute was established in 1990 by the late Conrad Fink, a journalism professor at the Grady College. It is named for the late James M. Cox Jr., who headed Cox Enterprises and Cox Broadcasting Corporation from 1957 until 1974.
