Research Interests and Activities

Dr. Porter is the Karen W. and Daniel J. King Distinguished Professor in Advertising. Prior to joining the faculty at Grady, Porter spent twenty years at Louisiana State University, where he founded the Social Media Analysis and Creation (SMAC) Lab. He is the author and editor of several books and numerous journal articles. His research focuses on emerging media, brand activism and power.

Dr. Porter teaches Digital and Social Communication Strategies, Advertising and Communication Management.

Experience

Porter has focused on digital media since 1995, when he built his first commercial website. As executive director of digital marketing for Disney’s film studio and later on retainer as a creative consultant, he has worked on hundreds of successful film-marketing campaigns. He continues to consult with international clients to evaluate digital creative strategies. Past clients include Disney, Visa, Warner Bros., DreamWorks and the Louisiana Department of Health.

  • LSU Rainmaker Mid-Career Scholar Award (2017), Campus peer award recognizing outstanding research, scholarship and creative activity that extends beyond academia.
  • Ralph Sims Lifetime Achievement Award (2016), Award presented by the Baton Rouge chapter of the American Advertising Federation honoring lifetime achievement in advertising education.
  • AAF Donald G. Hileman Memorial Educator of the Year Award (2010), Peer award presented to top advertising educator in District 7 of the American Advertising Federation (Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee)
  • Alumni Faculty Excellence Award (2009, Peer award based on teaching, research and service at the university level.
  • Tiger Athletic Foundation Teaching Award (2006-07), Award based on peer and student evaluations of teaching given to top teachers in each college at LSU.
