UGA Student Earns Poynter ACES Certificate in Editing

Jacqueline GaNun, an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia, recently earned the Poynter ACES Certificate in Editing.

GaNun, a junior journalism and international affairs double major, who is also earning a French minor, completed the online training program through the Poynter Institute’s News University in partnership with the American Copy Editors Society.

GaNun completed the certificate and fulfilled the requirements of the Cox Institute’s challenge grant program, which will provide her a scholarship to reimburse the cost of the training.

“The certificate included really valuable editing philosophies and advice along with copy editing practice. One of the most important lessons I took away from it was how to edit without changing the writer’s voice,” said GaNun. “I’ve already thought back to some of the modules and applied them to my work.”

GaNun is currently the editor-in-chief at The Red & Black, where she previously worked as a news editor and assistant recruitment editor. She worked as a reporting fellow for The Current in Savannah, Georgia this past summer.

“Our challenge grant provides funding for motivated students to supplement their course work with additional skills training,” said Herndon. “We’re excited that Jacqueline used this program to complete the challenging copy editing certificate.”
