2019 Mobile News Lab Finishes with Project Showcase
The Grady College’s 2019 Mobile News Lab completed its fall session with a projects showcase held Monday, Oct. 21.
The extracurricular program is operated by the James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership with sponsorship from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.
Students apply to participate in the Mobile News Lab, which provides a program for them to experiment with mobile newsgathering tools and techniques while also learning mobile best practices from Grady faculty, guest speakers and graduate and undergraduate student leaders.

The 2019 participants included: Jada Bowman, Dara Carr, Mikaela Cohen, Connor Foarde, Melissa Ge, Jessica Hamlin, Kala Horvat, Peyton Lewis, Viet Nguyen, Skylar Nicholson, Janani Rammohan, Alexandra Rios, Abeer Saberi, Erin Schilling, Rosemary Scott, Ashley Soriano, Kassidy Thomas and Kimberly Trujillo. The student leaders for this year’s lab were Kelly Mayes, Amy Scott and Ashlyn Webb. Charlotte Norsworthy, the Cox Institute’s graduate assistant, was the project’s overall manager.
For the third consecutive year, Blake Sabatinelli, the CEO of Newsy, delivered keynote remarks following a certificate ceremony held during the projects showcase. His appearance was part of an ongoing training alliance between Newsy and the Cox Institute.
“Before the mobile news lab, I was completely unaware how effective our mobile phones were for telling stories. I learned how to shoot, edit and write stories all on my phone. I also learned about apps that could record and transcribe interviews simultaneously,” said Mikaela Cohen, a Mobile News Lab participant. “The Mobile News Lab was an invaluable experience and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be apart of it.”
Upon completion of the Mobile News Lab, participants received a certificate of achievement awarded by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters (GAB), which was the 2019 sponsor.
“The GAB and the Cox Institute enjoy a mutually beneficial training relationship and we are so appreciative of what this means for our students in terms of the opportunities it creates for them,” said Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Institute.
