Cox Institute Director Receives UGA Creative Teaching Award

Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Institute, received a 2019 University of Georgia Creative Teaching Award.

Presented by the Office of Instruction, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Provost, the award recognizes faculty who have taken innovative steps to promote student success in their classes and have made a significant impact at the university. Herndon is one of four professors recognized this year who helped students apply their knowledge in engaged, hands-on learning activities outside the traditional classroom.

Herndon was chosen for his work with the Cox Institute through
programs such as the Grady Mobile News Lab and the Levin Leaders program. Those
programs help students develop skills in decision making and thought leadership
in preparation for careers in a chaotic news media environment.

Herndon “has engaged nearly 200 students since 2013 through two
highly successful extracurricular programs to help them become better prepared
to tackle real-world changes in an ever-changing media market,” according to
award’s announcement release.

Rahul Shrivastav, Vice President for Instruction, surprised Herndon with news of the award at the 2019 Cox Institute’s Spring Leadership Dinner. Watch the video of this moment here.

The award was formally presented on April 1 at the annual Faculty Recognition Banquet.

“It’s extremely gratifying to work with the amazing students we
have at the Grady College,” Herndon said. “They embrace the Cox Institute’s
programs because they see the value in learning about leadership and innovation
in an industry context.”
