Andy Johnston is the editor of The Oglethorpe Echo, a weekly newspaper in partnership with Grady College that provides real-word community journalism experience for UGA students. The Echo was second place in General Excellence at the 2025 Georgia Press Association awards and was awarded the Beacon Award for outstanding education coverage in 2023. The Echo has won 32 GPA awards in its three full years of partnership with Grady College. In addition to help leading The Echo capstone class, Johnston teaches a sports media class in the Carmical Sports Media Institute every semester. As a journalist, Johnston has covered sporting events on every level, including the Super Bowl, Olympics, the Masters and Final Four for daily newspapers and websites. He was recognized as one of the country’s top sports columnists in 2004. In 2005, he and his wife, Lori, started Fast Copy Communications, a freelance writing/editing/marketing company that contributed more than 1,000 articles a year to publications and websites across the country. His clients included the NCAA, The Associated Press, Fox Sports South, DawgNation, SEC Country, CNN and The AJC, among others.
