Grady College hosts Open Matter Boot Camp

Grady College is pleased to host Open Matter Georgia, on June 26-28, 2018.

Open Matter Georgia is one in a series of boot camps focused on immersive brainstorming to strengthen local journalism platforms. Through sessions and networking with industry professionals, participants discuss and conceptualize the future of media through a process called design-thinking.

The mission statement remains front and center for the three-day program.

The Grady College program is sponsored by the James M. Cox Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management & Leadership. The boot camp is sponsored through Matter by Google News Lab and New Media Alliance.

“It is exciting to host such an important outreach event. Bringing professionals to our campus for this intensive training is the kind industry-academic partnerships vital to the news media’s future,” said Keith Herndon, director of the Cox Institute and the host of the three-day event.

More than 35 professionals are expected to attend Open Matter Georgia including multidisciplinary work teams from American City Business Journals, Cox Media Group, Gatehouse Media (Florida) and Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.

Boot camps have already been held at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. A boot camp at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism is scheduled to take place the same time as Open Matter Georgia.

Matter was founded in 2012 as a place for experiments in media to happen. To date, Matter has supported nearly 75 media start-ups and 12 media institutions in testing new media products and business models in ways to meet the real needs of their audience, leverage emerging technologies and seek sustainable business models.
