AdPR NYC: Experience and Exploration Domestic Field Study
Join a group of 12 Grady students to participate in eight-week internships New York City while you learn about the many possibilities for your future in NYC!
The AdPR NYC: Experience and Exploration program combines coursework and experiential learning for students exploring careers in the one of the world’s leading cultural, financial and media centers.
AdPR NYC students will be enrolled in an advertising and public relations special topics class while working full-time in internships for course credit to augment their studies with real-world experiences, mentoring and networking opportunities with communications professionals in the New York market. This summer program will admit 12 students for a six credit hour program (combining a full-time internship and a three credit hour online course) for an eight-week program in the summer through session.
For summer 2022, students will arrive in NYC on Sunday, June 5 and depart NYC on Saturday July 30, 2022. Internships should begin Monday, June 6 and run through Friday, July 29. There will also be enrichment activities and meet and greets with guest practitioners on some evenings and/or on weekends during the program.
The Course and Course Objectives
The coursework will convey to students the tactical skills essential to make them effective communications practitioners in these markets and to develop an understanding of the importance of planning.
To understand the critical tools used by communications professionals in large markets.
To develop an understanding of the relationship between communicators and principals.
To understand the importance of external relations and corresponding communications tools.
To understand the significance of internal communications and their relationship to external communications.
To create written communications materials including memoranda, statements, testimony, and talking points, et al.
The general daily course format is lecture, presentations by guest speakers, timed writing assignment, and student presentation. Skills will be honed through timed writing assignments, briefings, class presentations, media content, stakeholder analysis, and case studies.
Who can apply?
This program is open to Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications undergraduate students and recent graduates interested in exploring the New York market. The program is open to all Grady majors, but is geared towards Advertising and Public Relations majors.

Applications open in August of each year. Applications for Summer 2022 are rolling admissions. Interviews will be set up on a first come first serve basis until the program is full.

Joseph Watson, the Carolyn Caudell Tieger Professor of Public Affairs Communications
Joseph Watson, Jr. is the Carolyn Caudell Tieger Professor of Public Affairs Communications. He directs the University of Georgia’s Public Affairs Communications Program, the first program in the nation to provide undergraduate students with practical training in the strategy and practice of public affairs communications focused on government, public policy, and politics. He has over 20 years of experience in public affairs campaigns and communications. Watson, a Harvard Law School graduate, served as an appointee in the Administration of President George W. Bush. Watson also worked on Capitol Hill, serving as a senior aide to former U.S. Senator Peter G. Fitzgerald (R-IL) and established and led the public affairs communications group for Fortune 100 Company, Exelon Corporation.
Rebekah R. Seabolt has been Grady College’s global studies coordinator since August 2016. She earned a bachelor of arts in public health from Georgia College and State University in 2011 and a master of arts in public relations from the University of Georgia in 2016. As the global studies coordinator, Rebekah is the point of contact for all of Grady College’s study abroad and domestic field study programs.
