Students in Cannes Lions program learn from actors of two popular shows set in Georgia

Students in Grady College’s Cannes Lions Advertising Study Abroad Program met with actors Steven Yeun and Aden Young on June 28 at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Besides posing for dramatic selfie-stick photos with students, each actor took time to answer questions and share personal experiences.

Yeun, who stars as Glenn on “The Walking Dead,” spoke to students about his experiences on set and the impact of the show’s popularity on his life. Students asked about how he uses social media personally and professionally. Yeun described his interests in photography and maintaining his own identity outside the show, as well as his early efforts at using social media to spread the word about his now immensely popular show.

Next, students met with Aden Young, who plays the lead role of Daniel on “Rectify.” The Peabody Award winning show is in its third season and examines what happens when Daniel is released from 19 years on death row and returns to small town life with his family. Young spoke eloquently about how an actor comes to terms with playing such an emotionally wounded character.

Both shows are set in Georgia and are shot on locations just south of Atlanta. Students were thrilled to meet them – as evidenced by the remarkable selfies.

The UGA Cannes Lions Advertising Study Abroad Program has the largest presence of any U.S. university at the festival.  Students can earn six hours of upper-level academic credit in advertising and mass communication courses. During the three-week program, June 15-July 3, students get to see first-hand the world’s best advertising and marketing campaigns and meet the people who created those campaigns. They also attend seminars, workshops, and master classes taught by leaders in the creative communications field.
