Hull, K. & Denetra Walker (2023). “Reputation Management Strategies at ESPN,”in Social Issues in Sport Communication. Eds. Rentner, T. L., & Burns, D. P.
Abstract: In light of the controversial leaked recording of Rachel Nichols making comments about Maria Taylor’s opportunity to host the NBA finals as part of ESPN’s “crappy longtime record on diversity,” this article looks at the reputation strategies used by ESPN. The case study looks at the history of gender and racial inequalities in sports, specifically at ESPN and the intersectional qualities that exist for Taylor who earned a highly coveted spot against the odds in sports broadcasting. Lastly, the article allows a “you make the call” with questions for readers to critically examine and answer questions posed by the authors about the strategies used in the situation.
