Fortmueller, K. (forthcoming 2022.) “Vintage Furniture: The Significance of the Casting Couch as Industry Gossip and Rumour,” NECSUS European Journal of Cinema and Media Studies.
Abstract: In this article, I argue that gossip and rumour are essential to understanding how Hollywood operates as a business and that casting couch scandals help us to understand Hollywood as an industry of desire. Gossip is important for aspirant networking, and as #MeToo reporting revealed, it helps women navigate the predatory men of Hollywood. Gossip and rumour retrench gendered hierarchies but are also discursive modes that teach aspirants to navigate the peculiarities and cultural minefields of the system and, in the case of casting couch lore, teaches women how to navigate and accommodate the powerful men in charge.
