Quindelda McElroy (Ph.D. Student) won “Top Poster Award – 1st Place” in the Critical and Cultural Studies Division at the 2025 AEJMC Conference in August for her paper titled, “Bluey is a Girl?!: Examining Gender Representation in America’s No. 1 TV show for Children.”
Abstract: The animated children’s series Bluey is now the No. 1 most-watched TV show in the U.S. The Australian-produced juggernaut is propelled by global appeal and massive merchandising. Plus, it heads to movie theaters in 2027. Despite this popularity, some people are shocked to learn that Bluey’s eponymous character is a girl. But why? This study engages media studies and gender theory to explore gender depictions and the resulting sociocultural implications for American audiences and parents.
