Public Relations Society of America co-brands UGA online social media course
The University of Georgia welcomes the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) as a supporting association of the online certificate course entitled “Using Social Media to Build Business.”
The 44-hour course was developed in 2013 by faculty of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Self-paced and self-study, the course is targeted for anyone who seeks in-depth, practical knowledge and actionable ideas about using social media effectively to win business.
“PRSA is thrilled to be supporting the University of Georgia’s social media course,” said Joe Cohen, APR, 2014 PRSA National Chair. “It is no secret that we live in a transformed environment where social media helps drive the news cycle, and having deep knowledge in the digital space is now a vital competency for PR pros.”
According to the agreement reached by PRSA and the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, UGA remains responsible for spearheading the development and design of course marketing strategies and PRSA will take a supporting role in promoting and recognizing the course in its printed publications, on its website and through various other outlets. In exchange, UGA will make the course available to PRSA members at a discounted rate, currently $449 per person. The standard course fee is $549.
“We are excited to partner with PRSA to deliver this course,” said Tom Reichert, head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. “The course is built to bring value to their membership.”
“Today’s ‘social consumers’ are more demanding and increasingly connected in their buying decisions,” said Pamela Bracken, department head of Special Projects and Curriculum Development at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. “Businesses need sound social media strategies integrated with their other communications vehicles.”
Along with earning 4.4 Continuing Education Units from UGA, successful course graduates receive a UGA and PRSA co-branded Certificate of Course Completion.
