Destiny Hartwell receives 2023 ESPN Scholarship via AWM Foundation
Destiny Hartwell, a journalism major and Carmical Sports Media Institute student from Statesboro, Georgia, recently received the 2023 ESPN Scholarship from the Alliance for Women in Media.
The scholarship is one of just two awarded nationally this year.
The scholarship will help Hartwell pursue her goal of working as a sports broadcaster for a leading media or sports organization such as ESPN or NCAA.
“This honor will also give me a chance to network with other women in the field,” she said, “not specifically just sports, but media in general which will allow me to open doors to new opportunities and new adventures.”
Hartwell has interned with Bleacher Report and 11Alive. She will graduate in May.
“When Destiny applied for the Sports Media Certificate program, she expressed a higher purpose of wanting to ‘bridge the gap’ of women of color in the sports media industry,” said Professor Vicki Michaelis, director of the Carmical Sports Media Institute. “She’s already making it happen. And it’s great to see her being recognized for that.”
To apply for the scholarship, Hartwell wrote an essay about her career aspirations.
“I’ve enjoyed my experiences and opportunities at UGA these last four years and the last two years through the Carmical Sports Media Institute,” Hartwell said, specifically thanking Prof. Michaelis and Carlo Finlay, the institute’s assistant director. “I would also like to thank my classmates and cohort because I’ve formed some lifelong friendships in this program. It has truly felt like a family.”
The Alliance for Women in Media is a national organization that supports women across all media platforms.
