Name: Mariya Lewter

Title of Internship: Digital Media

Company: WESH-TV/WESH.com (NBC Orlando)

Location: Orlando, Florida

Describe a typical workday in your internship.

During the day, I wrote and published articles, created media galleries, and cut videos for the station’s website. I also sometimes went into the field with the reporters and helped them with their stories for the TV newscast and/or for my own stories.

What was the biggest challenge you faced at your internship?

Learning to work with different software programs that I’ve never had to use before.

What was the most influential experience or most important skill you learned at your internship?

I honestly cannot pinpoint one specific experience because every day at my internship taught me a lot about what I can do. It gave me the confidence I needed to know that I have a future in media.

What advice would you give to a student looking for an internship?

Be open and willing to try something new! You never know what you may learn about your field or yourself. Also, get to know EVERYONE at the company you intern for. This industry is small, so anyone could know someone who could help you in the long run.

What part of your Grady education did you find most valuable during your internship?

Everything I’ve learned in my writing classes was extremely helpful. Things like SEO headlines, checking for factual errors, ledes, etc. I definitely believe Grady thoroughly prepared me for my internship.
