In addition to Study Abroad opportunities, Grady College offers incredible experiences for students within the US. The Grady DC Field Study and Internship Program is a hybrid of classroom study and experiential learning. Grady DC students are enrolled in a public affairs communications class taught at UGA’s Delta Hall on Capitol Hill and are working at D.C. area internships for course credit to amplify their learning with real-world experiences, mentoring and networking with public affairs communications professionals in the nation’s capital.
For summer 2023, students will arrive in DC on Saturday, June 3 and depart DC on Saturday July 29, 2023. Internships should begin Monday, June 5 and run through Friday, July 28. There will also be enrichment activities and meet and greets with guest practitioners on some evenings and/or on weekends during the program.
Students will receive 3 credit hours for their internship and 3 credit hours for an online course, ADPR 5990e – Public Affairs Communications – Practice in a Federal Context, for a total of 6 credit hours.
The goal of this course is to provide students with the tactical skills essential to make them effective public affairs practitioners in Washington, D.C., as well as to develop an understanding of the nature of public affairs communications at the federal level. Students will complete 8 modules that provide students with the essential skills needed to support a public affairs principal and manage external affairs in Washington, D.C. Students will learn to develop briefing materials, testimony, as well as the basics of speechwriting, fundraising, and event planning, among other things in the federal context.
This program is only open to students currently enrolled in Grady College or students outside of Grady who are enrolled in the Public Affairs Professional Certificate Program or in School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA).

Applications open in August of each year. Applications for Summer 2023 are due Thursday, November 10th, 2022.
Costs & Logistics
The program costs vary from year to year depending on number of students enrolled and logistical changes. The ESTIMATED program fee for Summer 2023 has not been determined at this time and is subject to change from what is advertised to students. The PROGRAM FEE for Summer 2022 was $2,915 (this included the $150 security deposit paid upon acceptance to the program). The amount is only an estimate and is subject to change until all students are accepted to the program in the Spring.
In addition to the program fee, students are expected to pay 6 hours of In-state tuition and UGA Mandatory Fees through their Athena student accounts after registration. The HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships can be applied towards TUITION only if applicable. **non-UGA transient students may have an additional $250 fee upon registration*
Program fee includes:
- 8 weeks lodging in fully-furnished dorms at UGA Delta Hall
- Shared kitchen and laundry facilities inside Delta Hall
- An opening and closing dinner
- UGA Alumni event in DC
- Classroom use
- Some faculty related expenses
Program fee does not include:
- 6 hours of in-state tuition and UGA Mandatory fees (See UGA’s website for updated tuition and fees rates for Summer 2023)
- Roundtrip airfare to DC (Cars are not allowed at Delta Hall)
- Ground transportation while in DC (metro, cabs, etc.)
