Grady College faculty and graduate students share research, accept awards at AEJMC conference
More than a dozen faculty and graduate students from the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication will participate in the annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conference August 4-7 in Minneapolis.
Among the highlights will be the presentation of the Charles E. Scripps Journalism and Mass Communication Teacher of the Year Award, which will be accepted by Carolina Acosta-Alzuru, an associate professor of public relations at Grady College. Acosta-Alzuru will accept her award at the Keynote Plenary Session, which begins at 6:45 on August 4.

The conference will also mark the first meeting of AEJMC’s 2016 Institute for Diverse Leadership in Journalism and Communication, for which Maria Len-Rios, associate professor of public relations, is one of eight people selected to participate in the 2016-2017 class. The Institute is a year-long workshop and mentoring program designed for people of color and women who are interested in academic leadership opportunities.

Additionally, Len-Rios, will begin serving on the Standing Committee of Research, in charge of reviewing AEJMC’s 18 divisions and 10 interest groups. The standing committee oversees the conduct of the annual academic research competitions that are conducted annually for which faculty present their research papers and posters. It also administers the national research awards granted by AEJMC.
“Involvement in national service with other faculty leaders in journalism and mass communication education has countless benefits, including keeping abreast of best practices, innovations, challenges, and changes on the horizon in the industry as well as academic research, teaching, and administrative policy,” Len-Rios said of her AEJMC involvement. “It is also personally satisfying being part of the leadership in the largest national organization of faculty focused on improving and maintaining the highest quality standards in journalism and mass communication education.”
Other Grady faculty active with committees include Ivanka Pjesivac who serves on the International Communication Division board and Bartosz Wojdynski who heads the Communication Technology Division.
Camila Espina, a fourth-year mass communication Ph.D. student at Grady College, will also be recognized as one of three recipients nationwide of the Inez Kaiser Graduate Students of Color Award to encourage careers of gradulate students of color. Espina is studying emerging media crisis communication with a focus on digital media, as well as the role of the Internet and social media affordances on audience perceptions, attention and behavior.
