Grady College researchers to be recognized at AEJMC 2014

Academics from the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication will be attending the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) annual conference August 6-9 in Montreal.

AEJMC is an educational association of journalism and mass communication educators, students and media professionals.

Awards

In addition to the many selected papers and presentations, the Grady College faculty members listed below are being recognized for their accomplishments by AEMJC

Carolina Acosta-Alzuru will be recognized as a finalist for the 2013 Scripps Howard Journalism and Mass Communication Teacher of the Year award.

Itai Himelboin will accept an honorable mention from the journal Communication Methods and Measures for the article he co-authored with Marc Smith and Ben Shneiderman, “Tweeting apart: Applying network analysis to detect selective exposure clusters in Twitter.” 

Yan Jin, a new faculty member starting this fall, will be receiving the Krieghbaum Under-40 Award. This annual award honors an AEJMC member under 40 years of age who has shown outstanding achievement and effort in AEJMC’s three key areas: teaching, research and public service.

Maria Len-Rios, a new faculty member starting this fall, will be receiving the 2nd place ComSHER Article of the Year Award 2014 with Amanda Hinnant and Rachel Young. The article, “Journalistic Use of Exemplars to Humanize Health News”, was published in Journalism Studies and will be formally acknowledged at the ComSHER Division Business Meeting.

Karen Russell will be recognized as the editor of the top downloaded journal article from the Journal of Public Relations Research, the official journal of the AEJMC PR Division.

“We support excellent scholarship and education in the fields of public relations and advertising,” commented Tom Reichert, the department head of Grady College’s Advertising and Public Relations, on Russell’s achievement. “We also want our professions to know that a great deal of that excellence emanates from UGA's Grady College.”

Receptions

Two receptions are scheduled for Grady College AEJMC members as the conference concludes in Montreal.

AEJMC members from The University of Georgia and The University of Florida will gather for the “The World’s Largest Indoor Tailgate” at Salons 6 & 7 at Le Centre Sheraton Montreal on Friday, Aug. 8, 8:45 to 10 p.m. Game wear is a must for entry. Please RSVP by Aug. 4 to karena@uga.edu.

The Grady College Centennial brunch meeting and discussion will be held at Salon Musset, Level A at the Le Centre Sheraton Montreal on Saturday, Aug. 9, 9 to 10:30 a.m. Please RSVP by Aug. 4 to karena@uga.edu.
