Research Interests and Activities

Dr. Strausbaugh’s principal focus is on strategic planning, with a heavy emphasis on branding. She has developed an instrument for the measurement of brand personality, has had papers published in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Advertising Conferences and also serves as a full-service integrated marketing communications consultant.

Teaching Specialties

Dr. Strausbaugh teaches Advertising Message Strategy, Advanced Portfolio, Graphic Communication, and Advertising Campaigns. She serves as faculty advisor to the UGA AdClub, the student-run ad agency Hooper Sanford Baldwin Thomas, and the design house Studio120. Her instructional activities, in conjunction with these student-run organizations, are designed to promote advertising as a major and to provide students with exposure to professionals and issues in the field. Additionally, she coordinates and serves as faculty escort for the AdClub’s annual New York Agency Tour.

Experience

Dr. Strausbaugh spent several years as an Account Manager at Yellow Shoes Advertising on the Disney Cruise Line and Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons accounts at Walt Disney Theme Parks and Resorts. Also prior to joining the Grady College, she served as Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama’s College of Communication, teaching Advertising Management and Mass Communication Research Techniques. She also spent time in the field of direct marketing as an Account Manager for National List Council in Orlando, Florida.

Cantrell-Bickley

About: Thirty+ years in various television news positions including anchor, investigative reporter, executive producer and News Director. As News Director launched one of the first local news websites in the United States. Seven years leading CBS, NBC and ABC stations as President/General Manager.

About: James Biddle is an award winning filmmaker and editor who specializes in the teaching of post production workflow and management, audio design, Steadicam operation, visual efx, and the artistic and technical aspects of video/film editing. Professor Biddle runs the Grady College Authorized Training Center for Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere.

Dr. Griffith’s research interests include creative writing and creativity and advertising. Presently she is working on a collection of original poetry and a project that combines creative writing pedagogy with principles of teaching copywriting.

Dr. Griffith teaches advertising message strategy and advertising campaigns and coordinates the Evenings at UGA advertising lecture series.

Experience

Before joining the faculty of the Grady College, Dr. Griffith was an assistant professor of English at Clayton State University where she taught creative writing and writing and editing for mass media. Additionally, she has taught emotive writing at The Portfolio Center, worked as a copywriter for Clarke Broadcasting and Southern Broadcasting in Athens, Georgia, and created advertising campaigns for several freelance clients.

Dr. Griffith is also a certified Pilates instructor and teaches Pilates classes at several locations in Athens.

Landrum

About: Landrum teaches Graphic Communication and Advertising Message Strategy. She works with undergraduate students to develop an understanding of basic design concepts, common design challenges, idea generation, brainstorming, and content writing and editing using Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign).

Landrum is interested in working with area organizations to raise awareness of health, wellness and fitness opportunities for youth and families.

Teaching Specialties

Landrum has taught traditional and digital photojournalism, information graphics, newspaper design and layout in the Journalism department at Grady College, digital design, type + image, graphic design survey at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, and currently teaches Graphic Communication and Advertising Message Strategy in the Advertising & Public Relations department.  She serves as the faculty advisor of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).

Experience

Landrum has more than twenty years of experience communicating in a visual language, crafting identities and designing in a variety of mediums including print, web and large scale installation design. She has been honored with two Summit Creative Awards for print design and has helped businesses of all sizes navigate the landscape of marketing and advertising.

Her clients ranged in industry from healthcare, banking, real estate, education, and technology (IT) to small business, restaurants, service industries, retail, and more. Kim’s clients have spanned the southeast and united states from Athens, Georgia, to New York, Texas, Florida, Michigan, and even Jamaica.

Landrum has also worked with more than 100 area youth in running and triathlon as the co-founder and head coach of Dream Team Triathlon. Kim is a USA Triathlon Level I and Youth & Junior Certified Coach and has helped the Athens YWCO, Athens Orthopedic Clinic and Athens Clarke County Leisure Services manage and execute races and camps for kids.

Ms. Smith is interested in graphic design practice and history. She is also interested in creativity, cartooning, editorial illustration and storytelling. Ms. Smith edited a book titled “The Lines are Drawn: Political Cartoons of the Civil War”.

Ms. Smith teaches Graphic Communication, Advanced Graphic Communication and Public Relations Communication.

Experience

Ms. Smith has conducted ethnographic research in media education. She has worked in publishing. She has worked in printing and as a graphic designer. She has experience in event management and publicity. She has worked as a public relations coordinator for three units at the University of Georgia. In addition to writing feature stories, press releases and speeches in her professional life, she published book reviews in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Her cartoons have appeared in The Funny Times, The American Enterprise, On the Issues, Reader’s Digest, Z Magazine, Georgia Magazine, Flagpole Magazine and in the textbook, Rereading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Thinking and Writing.

Ms. Smith is the faculty adviser to Creative Consultants, the student-run p.r. agency affiliated with the Drewry Chapter of PRSSA at the University of Georgia.

Experience

John Weatherford serves on the faculty of the New Media Institute in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. His courses cover topics including iOS app development, emerging photographic technologies, and digital product design. He serves on the steering committee for TEDxUGA as Director of Production and Photography and has been awarded fellowships focused on technology and teaching. Prior to joining the NMI, John taught in the English Department at UGA, where he developed courses such as Documentary Filmmaking and Writing for Nonprofits. He co-founded and serves as CFO of the Calliope Initiative, a non-profit open-source software project that designs web applications for writing courses.

Johnson

About: Mark E. Johnson teaches photojournalism, multimedia journalism, video journalism and graphic design courses, serves as the college’s Chief Technology Officer and is director of the National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism competition. He directs the annual Woodall Weekend Workshop that takes advanced photojournalism students into rural Georgia counties to tell their stories as well as a fall workshop that has centered on motorsports photojournalism and the Georgia National Fair in the past. He developed the college’s first dedicated online news site and runs VisualJournalism.info.

Teaching Specialties

Mr. Johnson teaches courses in introductory and advanced photojournalism, documentary photojournalism, video journalism, graphic design end emerging journalism technologies. His Digital Literacy for Journalists video tutorials are used across the college and at several universities across the country.

Mr. Johnson emphasizes experiential learning in all of his classes and develops multiple workshops each year to bring his students into contact with diverse communities as well as industry professionals. Each spring, he leads the Woodall Weekend Workshop that brings students into a rural Georgia county to tell its story. The fall workshop focuses on what the Georgia National Fair means to citizens of the state. For both, industry professionals come in to work as coaches so the students can hear different view points and develop a broader skill set for showing the stories of communities.

He is a frequent speaker for the Georgia Press Association, National Press Photographers Association and is on the visiting faculty at the Poynter Institute where he co-directs their major conference for journalism educators. He has also been the the Education Chair and an Interim Executive Director of the National Press Photographers Association which he helped relocate to Grady College in 2015. In 2019, he brought the NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism competition to the colleges which is staffed by student volunteers each spring.

Mr. Johnson also coordinates student projects dealing with climate change and is on the story collection steering committee for GeorgiaClimateProject.org.

Experience

Mr. Johnson has been a visual storyteller since the late 1980s, working as a stringer for the Associated Press and Agence-France Presse. He has also spent time as a staff photographer at the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune and MetroWest Daily News, as an assistant chief photographer for Community Newspapers Company, photo editor of the Utica Observer-Dispatch and director of photography for SchoolSports Magazine and SchoolSports.com. He was a founding board member for the Intercollegiate Online News Network, chairing their annual conference as well as being the chair of the NPPA’s Convergence conference. He currently serves as a non-voting board member for the Red and Black Publishing Company.

Mr. Johnson is also a four-time Sports Car Club of America Road Rally Divisional champion, has served on the SCCA’s National RoadRally Board and is director of the SCCA Atlanta Region’s Road Rally program.
