SUMMARY:Photojournalism in a World of Crisis with Dr. Lauren Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Instructor and author Walsh addresses the critical role photojournalism plays and explores numerous challenges and threats the industry faces. \nWalsh teaches at The New School and New York University\, where she is the director of the Gallatin School Photojournalism Lab. She is also the director of Lost Rolls America\, a national public archive of photography and memory. \nWalsh will talk on the subject of two of her books: “Conversations on Conflict Photography\,” an introspective look at the complexities and nuances of photographing war and humanitarian crisis\, and her newest book\, “Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter\,” featuring a series of conversations with photographers and photo editors reflecting on how they documented ethical\, technological and safety concerns in 2020. \nShe is currently co-directing “Biography of a Photo\,” an in-progress documentary about two iconic photographs of conflict. \nAdditionally\, Walsh’s research interests include politics and ethics of photography\, and contemporary visual culture. She has been interviewed on CNN and BBC and has appeared on radio programs and as an expert on photography in the documentary “9/11: Ten Years Later.” \nSome of Walsh’s photography and research can be found on her Instagram account\, @LWalsh242.

It is presented as part of the Willson Center’s Global Georgia Initiative public events series. \nBluestein is a politics and government reporter for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a graduate of the University of Georgia with degrees in journalism and political science. His book Flipped will be published on March 22\, 2022 by Penguin Random House. \nBluestein will be joined in conversation by Audrey Haynes\, associate professor of political science\, Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor\, and director of the Applied Politics Certificate Program in the School of Public and International Affairs. \nThis event is co-sponsored by Grady College\, the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts\, SPIA and Office of Research.

SUMMARY:Responding to Problems through Solutions Journalism with Cathrine Gyldensted
DESCRIPTION:Danish journalist and scholar Cathrine Gyldensted\, joins us to discuss world-class solutions journalism concepts. \nGyldensted is an investigative journalist\, author and expert on solutions journalism\, a holistic approach to reporting that centers on responses to issues rather than the problems themselves.  \nShe is the author of “From Mirrors to Movers\,” a practical guide to the five elements of solutions journalism. From 2015 to 2018\, Gyldensted served as the world’s first Director of Constructive Journalism at Windesheim University in the Netherlands.  \nSince 2000\, Gyldensted has served as a reporter\, a radio anchor and executive producer at the Danish Broadcasting Corporation and at Radio24syv. Gyldensted has published several books covering U.S. politics\, media critique and solutions journalism methods.  \nAdditionally\, Gyldensted’s work has been featured in The Guardian\, Huffington Post\, TEDxDresden and by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers.  \nGyldensted\, who has traveled throughout Scandinavia\, Europe and the United States teaching workshops and speaking at international media conferences\, is currently specializing in open source intelligence methods covering the Arctic region.  \nMore information on Gyldensted\, as well as some of her work\, projects and research\, can be found on her website.
