DESCRIPTION:Eric Deggans\, television critic on National Public Radio\, will deliver a Peabody-Smithgall Lecture: “Decoding Media’s Coverage of Race\, Gender and Differences” on April 3\, 2019\, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel. \nDeggans is one of the most prominent media critics working today. As NPR’s first full-time television critic\, his stories are regularly broadcast on “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.” In addition to his work with NPR\, Deggans also contributes to various national media outlets. Deggans chairs the Peabody Board of Jurors\, which he has served on since 2013.

SUMMARY:GSPA Spring workshop and awards
DESCRIPTION:Join GSPA and its members from across the state in celebrating the best in high school journalism of the GSPA at the 2019 GSPA Spring Awards. The event will be held at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel on Tuesday\, April 9. \nThis year’s event combines favorite elements from awards celebrations over the years.  It will begin with a morning conference focused on professional development from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.\, and will conclude with a banquet-style awards luncheon\, catered by The Georgia Center\, starting at noon. Professional dress is suggested. \nWe hope you’ll join us for this special day honoring all of your hard work and a major milestone for GSPA! \nRegistration will be open early February. Attendance is free for advisers and $25 per student.

DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join us for a reception and complimentary screening of “Grady Greats: a conversation about the enduring values and power of journalism.” \nDiscussions ranging from how journalism has changed over the years\, to diversity in the industry and the most important journalism skills were featured in a panel filmed in front of a live studio audience on Jan. 22\, 2019. \nThe panel was moderated by author and journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault (ABJ ’63) and included Deborah Roberts (ABJ ’82)\, Deborah Norville (ABJ ’79)\, Lisa Ryan Howard (ABJ ’92) and Will Carr (ABJ ’06). \nRobin Hommel (ABJ ’96)\, senior broadcast producer of “The View\,” helped coordinate the panel as the executive producer of Grady Greats\, with Parker Middleton\, Dodie Cantrell-Bickley and the students of DiGammaKappa who served as associate producers. The panelists addressed an audience of Grady College students\, alumni and friends in the ABC studios where “The View” is broadcast.
