DESCRIPTION:Grady students\, faculty and guests are invited to gather for a banquet and ceremony honoring this year’s group of Cox Poynter Leaders. \nThe Cox Institute and the Poynter Institute’s News University have partnered to offer top Grady journalism students the opportunity to earn a Media Leadership Certificate during the Spring semester. \nParticipants\, selected competitively\, are immersed in an eight-week hybrid training experience that combines the best of online education with facilitated leadership development workshops.  The program is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in a “digital first” era influenced by social media and an explosion in mobile platforms. \nKeith Herndon\, visiting professor\, leads the leadership workshops and coordinates the program. \nClick here for information regarding the Cox Institute

SUMMARY:Drone Journalism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Grady College has been selected to be the first site for an innovative new drone journalism program sponsored by The Poynter Institute\, Google News Lab\, Drone Journalism Lab at the University of Nebraska\, National Press Photographers Association and DJI. \nThe hands-on workshop and online teaching will train journalists in using drones\, or unmanned aerial systems\, for their news coverage. The Grady College workshop is scheduled for March 17-19. \nThe workshops will offer training on safe drone operations as well as information that drone pilots need to study for the Federal Aviation Administration’s new Part 107 Drone Pilot’s Certificate. SUMMARY:Global Diseases: Voices from the Vanguard
DESCRIPTION:Two top deputies working alongside Deborah L. Birx\, M.D.\, Ambassador-at-Large and U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator at the U.S. Department of State\, will chart the scientific progress against AIDS and enduring barriers to stopping its spread at 5:30 p.m. on March 21\, 2017\, at the University of Georgia Chapel. \nBirx\, the program’s original speaker\, is unable to attend due to a family health emergency. Sandra L. Thurman\, chief strategy officer\, and Cornelius Baker\, chief policy advisor\, both from the United States Department of State’s Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy\, will present “The War Against AIDS\, 35 Years and Counting: Are We There Yet?” \n The lecture is sponsored by the Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism and the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases.  It is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception at Demosthenian Hall\, next door to the Chapel.

DESCRIPTION:The Cox International Center\, Grady College\, and the Department of International Affairs\, School of International and Public Affairs will co-sponsor Dr. Sam Cherribi’s lecture “Fridays of Rage: Al Jazeera\, the Arab Spring and Political Islam.“ \nSam Cherribi (PhD\, University of Amsterdam) is Senior Lecturer at Emory University (MESAS) and Associate Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics. \nPrior to moving to Emory in 2003\, Dr. Cherribi served as a Member of Parliament in The Netherlands for two consecutive four-year terms (1994-2002)\, during which time he also represented The Netherlands in the Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Assembly of the West European Union. \nDr. Cherribi’s book “In the House of War: Dutch Islam Observed” was published in paperback in 2013 by Oxford University Press. His most recent book is “Fridays of Rage: Al Jazeera and the Arab Spring\,” published by Oxford University Press in 2017.
