$250,000 Grant For The Cox International Center
On June 25, 2019, the Cox International Center was awarded $250,000 from the U.S. Department of State (through the US Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia) to train Georgian journalists. Several universities and other organizations applied for this competitive grant issued under the funding opportunity titledMedia Education Program (MEP) DOS-GEO-19-CA-001-040119.
The Cox Center is the international outreach unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.
The Georgia Media Education Program - as created by the Cox International Center - is a result of the partnership between three University of Georgia Institutions (the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, the New Media Institute, also part of the Grady College, and the Office forĀ Global Engagement); as well as the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, and prestigious media outlets in the state of Georgia, which include CNN, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Red & Black, WTOC-TV Savannah, and Savannah Morning News. At these media organizations, the Georgian visitors will shadow journalists, will have practical sessions, Q&A sessions with managers and journalists, and five of them will have internships at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The ultimate goal of the program is to foster democracy, transparent governance, and freedom of expression in the country of Georgia by supporting free and independent media.
“We are glad and honored for getting this award and we will use our expertise gained through conducting hundreds of programs for journalists and other mass communication experts all over the world,” said Dr. Tudor Vlad, director of the Cox International Center. “I think the decision of the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi reflects the reputation of the Grady College and of the University of Georgia in the international educational arena. Our university has a long history of partnership with organizations in the country of Georgia and we hope our media program will strengthen this collaboration.”
