Cox Center Director Among Organizers Of International Public Administration Event
“We have developed here in Cluj-Napoca an excellent relationship between the City Hall and Babes-Bolyai University,” mayor Emil Boc told about 150 participants in the Transylvanian International Conference in Public Administration in early November. “We have common projects and plans that benefit students, faculty and citizens of the city. As the mayor and as a political science professor, I want the university to be actively and intensely involved in the strategic development plan for Cluj-Napoca that we have drafted.”
“Babes-Bolyai is the largest and the most prestigious university in Romania, and we have been working hard in the last six years to foster its international reputation,” said Dr. Ioan-Aurel Pop, rector of Babes-Bolyai University. “This conference is a part of this project, and I am glad to see how many scholars from the United States, Europe and Asia we have in the program.”
Dr. Tudor Vlad, director of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research at the University of Georgia, was one of the organizers and keynote speakers of the event held at the College of Political, Public Administration and Communication Sciences on November 2-4. The Cox International Center is an outreach unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
“In the United States, more than 10,000 journalists lost their jobs during the global economic crisis, and the newsrooms have been shrinking,” Dr. Vlad said in his presentation that focused on the role of communication in public administration in the digital era. “As a result, local governments have to identify new channels to communicate with the citizens and to stimulate civic engagement. We have to develop training programs in communication for public administrators the same way we have done media assistance activities.”
Former Fulbright scholar in the Cox International Center, Dr. Andreea Voina, also had a presentation titled, "Women Mayors and their Online Communication among the Top 100 U.S. Cities." The paper is a result of research that Andreea Voina conducted while spending nine months at the University of Georgia to work on her PhD. dissertation on women in politics in the United States and in Romania.
