Grady Business Fellows At CNN
“President Trump’s communication strategy has affected media coverage of politics and even how and what we define as news,” CNN Vice President Tim Langmaid told a group of four Business and Public Communication Fellows and two Grady College faculty. “Sometimes it looks like we are focusing on issues that aren’t so important, but if the public finds them relevant, we need to cover them.”
Langmaid also is CNN Senior Editorial Director. During the meeting in March at the CNN headquarters in Atlanta, he was accompanied by Kim Norgaard, Senior Director of Coverage; Vickie Russell, Director of Coverage, CNN International Newsource; B. Ram Ramgopal, Executive Editor, The Row; Samira Jafari, Executive Editor, The Row; and Sonia Tucker, Senior Manager, Affiliate Relations.
The session was organized by the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research as part of the Business and Public Communication Fellowship of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. The Cox International Center is the international outreach unit of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The Fellowship is the result of the partnership between the Department of Advertising and Public Relations and the Cox International Center. It has been designed to provide business and public communication professionals and researchers with opportunities to update and develop their knowledge and skills in a world class education and research setting and to be able to adjust in a rapidly changing media environment.

When asked by Dr. Tudor Vlad, director of the Cox International Center, how CNN differentiates its program from other media competitors, Norgaard answered that their goal is to be the news channel where people go to confirm the information they get from social media and from other sources and to have a more in-depth and professional coverage of those stories.
“There is a lot of talk about fake news these days,” Russell said. “People don’t always understand how complex the process of news reporting is, how we check and verify every piece of information. Maybe we should make more effort to explain this process to the audiences.”
“What we expect from government communicators is to talk to us,” Ramgopal told the visitors. “Saying ‘I don’t know’ or ‘I don’t have the information yet’ is better than not answering the phone or ignoring an email with a request from a journalist.”

The four Fellows were: Eui Kyun Hwang, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, South Korea; In Yong Lee, Office for Government Policy Coordination, South Korea; Jong Min Park, Institute for National Security Strategy, South Korea; and Myung Suk Song, Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, South Korea.
They were accompanied by Dr. Tudor Vlad and Dr. Jooyoung Kim, Executive Director,of the Business & Public Communication Fellows Program and Associate Professor of advertising.
