Cox Center Director Joined Grady Team To Teach Summer Courses At China's Xiamen University

Two Grady College faculty taught special summer courses for undergraduates in the School of Journalism and Communication at Xiamen University, Fujian Province, China, in late May and early June.

Dr. C. Ann Hollifield, Dowden Professor in the Department of Journalism, taught a course in media leadership and management.

Dr. Lee B. Becker, director of the James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research, taught a course in social science research methods. Dr. Becker is also a faculty member in the Department of Journalism.

A total of 15 students attended Dr. Hollifield's 10 lectures over the two-week period. Dr. Becker also had 15 students participate in his social science research methods class.

"I was so impressed with the students," Dr. Becker said. "They were excited about the subject matter and wonderfully engaged in the classes. It was a true pleasure to meet with them each session."

"The students' understanding of the challenges of 21st Century journalism and communication issues was deep and impressive," Dr. Hollifield said. "We had wonderful discussions about the future of communication studies both in China and globally."

Xiamen University was the first school in China to offer a journalism major, which it began in 1922. The University founded the Journalism and Communication Department in 1983. The department became the School of Journalism and Communication in 2007.

The School of Journalism and Communication includes a Journalism Department, an Advertising Department, and a Communications Department as well as the Research Center for Taiwan Media, the Journalism Institute, the Communication Institute, the Research Center for Brand and Advertising, and the Research Center for Strategic Communication.

The special summer courses taught by Professors Hollifield and Becker were in the Journalism Department.

The Cox International Center currently is hosting Dr. Lin Lin Wu, a faculty member in the School of Journalism and Communication, and has extended an invitation to host another faculty member in the School, Dr. Xiaoyan Chen, in the fall of 2016.

Following the course instruction, Drs. Hollifield and Becker met with Dr. Lifeng Yan, School of Journalism and Communication deputy dean, Dr. Hongming Zhuang, chairman of the Department of Journalism, and Dr. Chen to discuss possible future relationships between the Cox Center and the Grady College and Xiamen University.

"We look forward to exploring additional collaborations between the University of Georgia and Xiamen University," Dr. Becker said. "We knew of the reputation of Xiamen before our visit and now have first-hand experience with the quality of the programs offered."

The Cox Center is an international outreach unit of the Grady College.
